Get to know Lunar Lagoon

Lunar Lagoon, the alternative electronic duo from Naarm/Melbourne, pushes you into a new world, eyes closed. The duo is Joe Nurrish and Luke Morton. Their recent singles are simultaneously dreamy and grounded. Intentional and introspective. Playing with repetition, the pair weaves fuzz-heavy guitars, electronic drums and synths, transforming minimal beats into more orchestrated compositions without pretense. Their recent singles signal an overarching story, to make songs that bloom as you listen in. On “Drifting Away” the vocal delivery is smooth. The melody delicately hovers over the minimal electronic production. On “Miles” a bass line gives way into a post-punk inspired sound, expanding Lunar Lagoon’s sonic planet. Lunar Lagoon makes the type of music that slowly envelops you.

We spoke to Lunar Lagoon about being a melody-driven project, receiving feedback, their post-punk influences and Glastonbury.

How do your songs usually begin: lyrics, melody, or a vibe?

The tracks usually begin with melody, but I tend to piece together lyrics I have already preemptively written in my head without any song to use as a base. It's a bit of a mishmash but has worked well for us so far. Vibe definitely guides us as we move the song forward, but the melody is usually what kicks things off.

How do you decide on the sonic direction of a record?

We usually try to follow wherever the song is leading us. I think it helps having the 2 of us because it means we can pave the path together.

What artists were foundational for you?

Big ones would definitely have to be Mount Kimbie & King Krule, but I feel vocally I tend to take a lot of inspiration from Dean Blunt, Mark William Lewis & James Massiah. I'm a big fan of the dub poetry scene in the UK & the way James Massiah intertwines this with alt-electronic music.

In terms of a base for us, we're long time fans of bands like The Style Council, Cocteau Twins & The Sound, which is probably where the more post-punk & blue-eyed soul inflections come into play.

Do you read reviews, or avoid them?

We always read everything where we can! All feedback is good feedback. But please be nice.

What would your dream headline read?

Lunar Lagoon included in the lineup for Glastonbury [insert year]. Eeeeeek

Who are some of your favorite indie bands from Melbourne?

Our big favs would have to be our friends The Belair Lip Bombs who are killing it at the moment, as well as Dogworld & Daisypicker.
