Video Premiere: GLICH3 “Class”

Today we’re premiering the music video for “Class” by Houston indietronica act GLICH3. The song’s taken from our debut compilation daylight x darknight, which they describe as “a radical love song amidst a class war.”

The video was directed by Beverley Buchanan (Fern and Rocket). “A while back I had a dream about a woman dancing in slow motion to a song that I could tell made her very spiritually connected,” she says. “It was my friend [GLICH3’s] song “Class” that had been stuck in my head since I first heard it.” That realization prompted Buchanan to make the video.

“I wanted the video to look like something friends just decided to make on a Sunday with the haunting addition of a professionally trained dancer,” she explains. Though casual in form, the message is much deeper. “I had a few ideas of themes I wanted in the video: catharsis to our healthcare struggles here in America, the punk ethos of DIY and not giving a fuck how you made something–just that you made something that someone else hasn’t.” The tension between healthcare struggles and creative freedom gives the video its emotional weight.

The scenes shot on train tracks are visual references from early 90s Sonic Youth and Nirvana music videos. Those visuals are merged with a local space central to the group’s creative life.

“The dark studio we filmed the other scenes in is an art piece of its own. We’ve been renting the place as a collective for a year now and it’s become a living breathing organism of thought and love for music, visual art and collection,” Buchanan explains. “It’s a cheap, janky place but we can create anything we want in it and that is something none of us had the privilege of having in our teenage years.”

On the dance piece, Buchanan collaborated with Lindsay Cortner. “We’ve been good friends for years now,” she says, “and I’ve been talking about making a video with a solo dance in it for ages. Everything just lined up perfectly.”

Though GLICH3 had a mood for the video in mind, he gave Buchanan space to experiment and tell the story. “I envisioned a somewhat dark, pretty vibe for a video to match the somber melancholic cadence of the song,” they say. “I knew I wanted to perform while movement and lights took the front of the room. I see this as an audio-visual piece, a collaboration between multiple artists to create a unique energy cross-pollination.”
