Wide Orbit - What’s the Point (Live)

Chicago lo-fi rock band Wide Orbit shares their latest music video, a live version of “What’s The Point” off their debut album released last month. Influenced by bands like The Beatles and Beach Boys, Wide Orbit turns to the instrumentation of those early rock records. As frontman Ryan Tuohy explains, "'What’s The Point?' is very inspired by 60s and 60s-inspired artists. For example, the main guitar featured on this song is a Danelectro 12-string guitar, which was very popular in making tons of early 60s hits.” Thematically, it speaks to the idea that less is more. “This song was written after many of the more complex Wide Orbit songs had been written and the lyrics are sort of addressing the competitive nature of songwriting through the lens of a love song. The ‘point’ of the song was to write something very rudimentary and basic to try to emphasize that a song can have lots of value when it avoids complexity."

The video itself looks like a throwback to early 90s footage. The visual blends images of Wide Orbit playing live at Lake House in Illinois with home recording footage. "This is a vintage camcorder video shot and edited by our friend Aaron,” Tuohy says. “This show took place over the summer in Bloomington, Illinois, where the record was recorded and took place a few weeks before the record was released. Aaron, who shot and edited the clip, spliced some old camcorder footage of his family in there to lean into the nostalgic energy of the song and video!"
