Staring at the “Clouds” with Julia Minkin

On her new single “Clouds” Julia Minkin (Kid Francescoli) captures that feeling of staring out into the horizon and tracing figures in the sky. Working with producer Andrew Sudhibhasilp, also her husband, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter juxtaposes feelings of sorrow over a minimalist electronic and synth-pop influenced beat.
“The lyrics are about depression, desensitization, compassion fatigue, mother love, true beautiful clouds at sunset, among other clouds. Andrew referred to Kavinsky’s 'Nightcall' and Kate Bush’s 'Wuthering Heights' during the production phase. We wanted a juxtaposition that was nostalgic, cinematic, feminine, and powerful.” The song builds slowly, like pieces of a puzzle coming together to form a skyline.
The song is taken off her upcoming album Not Ready. “This was not conceived as a concept album,” she says, but rather “happened organically. I didn’t know if they’d all go together. But I think it just happens that way when you write things in the same period. They tend to come from the same soup.”

Spirit Hotel's debut Rêve is an examination of the mind. It’s vivid, disorienting, and hard to shake. Fronted by Leila May Hauck, the record moves between haunting and harmonious, mirroring Hauck's own fascination with dreams, memory, and the unreliable narrator within all of us. We sat down with Leila to talk about turning visions into songs, the eerie pull of the Farfisa organ, daily creative rituals, and what it means to make music from a place you're not sure you can fully trust.
