New Releases - October 2025

Today is Bandcamp Friday.

We picked our favorite releases that came out in over the summer. Go pick up some records!

Lathe of Heaven - Aurora

New York’s Lathe of Heaven put out a strong contender for the year's best of lists. Sonically it's influenced by mid 80s British and Finnish post-punk. The lyrics touch on themes explored in sci-fi and cyberpunk books, and translating those into songs on warfare (“Portrait of a Scorched-Earth”), consciousness (“Exodus”) and devotion (“Aurora”).

Empty Threats - Happy Birthday

If you like punchy distorted post-punk, Happy Birthday is for you! Their second album, “sees the band looking inward (compared to their socially and politically charged first album Monster Truck Mondays), processing interpersonal and emotional dilemmas while exploring new sonic territories,” writes Short Corner Records.

Elle Barbara’s Black Space - Word on the Street

“The aliens are plotting to arrive on judgement day,” sings experimental artist Elle Barbara. As absurd as the lyrics may seem, they reflect our state of modern affairs. Last week, we literally had people thinking they were getting raptured. The album was written over the span of eight years and was heavily influenced by the work of Montreal street artist André Serouille [watch our episode of Objects where she talks more about this]. It’s synthy prog-rock that touches on genres including soul, disco and jazz.

Public Circuit - Modern Church

"Modern Church represents the collapse of connection—the album's chants are hollow, stripped back, and full of seething energy,” shares Public Circuit vocalist Ethan Biamont. The production on Modern Church is certainly more polished, but it stays true to the band’s spirit. “As we departed from the sound of our last album, we don’t see change as an enemy, but as a tool — a structure that can be repurposed, re-tuned into a tightly wound and potent new form.”

Hunx and His Punx - Walk Out On This World

It’s been more than a decade since their first album. It almost seemed like this album wouldn’t happen, after suffering loss, a pandemic and cross-country moves. On Walk Out On This World they’re the fun and rowdy band Hunx and His Punx have always been. We get 60s influenced bops on becoming a queercore icon (“Top of the Punks”), roaming the streets on drugs (“Alone In Hollywood On Acid”), and, of course, guys (“Wild Boys” & “Bad Boys”).

PFR Records - Paradigms II

Over the summer, Brooklyn artist-run indie label PFR Records released their second compilation Paradigms II. The collection puts together bands from Stockholm (Kungens Män) and Tokyo (ReRun Lance, Yuètù) to the Pacific Northwest (SNAKEY DUBLAY). Its overarching sonic aesthetic: dreamy guitar-drenched textures.
