Today Brooklyn indie rock band Looms shares their new song “I Killed A Man” off their latest EP Big Dream.
The song, featuring Nels Cline of Wilco on guitar, is about shedding a former self. It opens with frontman Sharif Mekawy singing softly over an acoustic guitar and atmospheric sounds. Changes in cadence accentuate certain phrases, Mekawy putting an emphasis on the whys? As he explains, "I think everyone has some kind of internal battle within themselves to figure out what kind of person they want to be in the world. There are these different versions of yourself that are all influenced by your past and in turn influence your actions. This song is my bout with one of those versions that no longer suits me."
The four-song EP was recorded at Gearbox Recording, where the Mekawy, alongside bandmembers Harry Morris Jr., A. Hammond Murray, Louis Cozza, and Fred Copeman, laid down tracks with engineer Ryan Ball. “I really feel like we’ve gotten closer to the music that’s in my heart with every release,” Mekawy says. “Making music, especially with other people, always ends up in places you didn’t expect or plan for. In the early years, the songs would come out much different than I pictured them. As time went on, we’ve gotten better at making the songs feel closer to what we were trying to accomplish from the start. It’s an amazing feeling to hone a craft over many years with a group of people.”
