5 Songs from The Faves

This week we picked music from Sasha Cay, Cailtin Starr, The Spook School, Ghost Painted Sky and GABI JR.

Hit play on our Apple Music playlist ‘the faves’ to check out more of our recent selections.

Sasha Cay - Scab

Montreal art rocker Sasha Cay have announced Will Tell Trick, the band’s upcoming album on Mint Records. Cay shares, “i’ve been waiting a long time to share these songs. to keep myself patient ive been laying crumbs. and here is a key! this video is the first of three. it puzzles together.” If we’re upside down or downside up, we’ll never know.

Caitlin Starr - Piece of Clay

Caitlin Starr, the melodic rock artist from New York, has unveiled her sophomore EP Speed Saves. On “Piece of Clay,” Starr looks back at what’s been shed. "The song grapples with the urge to discard what you’ve been made into and the pain of realizing the framework that defines your value is hard to escape," she says. "It’s about the cyclical return to where you began, despite the furious desperation to be remade. It's climactic and bittersweet, and grand — both vulnerable and inevitable." Watch the video where Starr gives us main character energy.

The Spook School - Corporate Caring

If you’ve ever had to fill out one of those corporate and “anonymous” questionnaires, you know the feeling. Indie pop act The Spook School calls out the hypocrisy of corporations, specifically mocking their pinkwashing tactics. Commenting on the new single, vocalist/guitarist Nye Todd says: “This is a song about a kind of shallow, meaningless, performative ‘caring’ that takes the place of any real solidarity or conviction. It’s about corporations who a couple of years ago had their logos plastered all over pride events and are now pouring money into the pockets of right wing politicians.”

Ghost Painted Sky - Kissing Lions

Choosing the easy way out isn’t always the best decision. That’s the motive behind Ghost Painted Sky’s latest single. “‘Kissing Lions,” the band explains, “describes those mostly vain attempts to seize on anything that creates a fleeting feeling of being alive for a moment amid relentless waves of the humdrum, doldrums, and failure, which so often end up being misguided and ultimately just creating a thicker mire even more strangling than the original situation one sought to escape... bad decisions that bite back and create further downward spirals.”

GABI JR - apologize

Sometimes things happen the way they’re supposed to. For LA-based songwriter GABI JR, that was certainly the case. “We recorded “apologize” live as a three piece onto two-inch tape,” Gabi says. “Blue (Broderick) on bass, Omar (Akrouche) on drums, me on rhythm guitar. I think we only did two takes and knew we had got what we wanted— it felt right. Then, I sent the song to Colson Miller (Neu Blume) and we talked about what we heard and envisioned for the song. Then Col sent me back a version with all his lead parts and that’s the version you hear now. It was minimal tracking, very simple and direct, yet you feel all the big things that are explicit, just like how the song is lyrically.”
