5 Songs from The Faves

We’ve got another five for you this week. New York’s MX Lonely, Italian punks HAKAN, Seattle’s Spiral XP, German punks Hippie Trim and Veronica Falls.

As always, listen to our curated Apple playlist ‘the faves’ to see all of our recent selections.

MX Lonely - Ex Rae Punk

New York’s MX Lonely dropped a new one. “‘Ex Rae Punk’ is about loving someone so hard you end up looking around for the pieces of someone for the rest of your life,” synthesist/vocalist Rae Haas explains. “It’s a reimagining of the first song I ever wrote in 2019 with Jake when we used to be called ‘v0idb0ys’. I briefly dated someone who would constantly refer to me as their “ex rae” (x-ray) after we stopped seeing each other. I realized quickly that they never really saw me at all (see right through you, see right through me).” Their upcoming EP Perfect House is out 10/2 via Julia’s War Recordings.

HAKAN - My New Team

Italian punks HAKAN dropped a new single off their forthcoming album. On “My New Team,” the band shares, "We chose this song as both the first single and the album opener because it holds a special place in the story of the upcoming record: it was the first song we wrote for it. It also captures the attitude of Hakan - very energetic and unapologetically "in your face". It felt like the best calling card for what the band is about." Watch the video for it, which opens with the warning: This video might make you trip out. Good.

Spiral XP - Blue Earth

Next month, Seattle’s Spiral XP will release their new EP Blue Earth. “The EP is named after Blue Earth, Minnesota, which we’d visited while we were driving through on our first tour as Spiral and immediately after, we drove into this crazy tornado storm,” the band explains. “We had to turn around in the eye of the storm and drive back to Blue Earth, where we took shelter in a gas station. It was a harrowing experience that brought us together.” That immediately led to band member Farr-Morrissey writing the lyrics in the van. Blue Earth is out 10/16.

Veronica Falls - Starry Eyes

Veronica Falls self-titled debut album will get a reissue via Slumberland and Bella Union. The UK band has shared “Starry Eyes,” a Roky Erickson cover, which was originally released as a B-side. “'Starry Eyes' comes from the earliest period of the band and was included on the first single,” the band shares. “Although originally written by Roky Erickson we made it our own, and it became permanently linked to the band, a favorite of fans and included in the set at every show. It was recorded by our friend Rory Attwell in our Hoxton Square studio, which we shared together in 2009. We did both songs in a couple of hours, giving them a raw, primal feel which comes across on the tracks when you listen to them today.”

Hippie Trim - Up In Smoke

Got a hard time keeping up? Are you angry about everything that's happening? “Up In Smoke” by German indie punk act Hippie Trim is about that feeling. “The world is getting crazier by the day,” the band says. “Things that used to be viewed with skepticism are now overlooked, accepted, and normalized. Facts have become relative. Truth no longer matters. This realization can leave you feeling paralyzed and frightened. Or it can be a wake-up call to let it all go up in smoke. That’s exactly what this song is about. A verbal punch to the gut for every snake slithering through the grass. An outlet for everyone who can barely keep going in the face of what they see day after day. If this resonates with you, this song is for you.”
