The Faves Playlist - June 2023

New music from Little Dragon, R. Missing, Michael Ian Cummings and more. Check out our faves below:

Still Blue - Honeysuckle Daydream

Irish indie pop band Still Blue has released their debut EP All Over the Chip Shop. On the opening track “Honeysuckle Daydream,” the Dublin band explores the possibilities. As the band explains, “Writing the song, we tried to encapsulate all the different emotions experienced in a night out – the complications of old relationships, the promise of new ones, and the feeling that anything could happen.” The EP is out now on Factions Records.

Lion Season - So Cool

On their new single “So Cool,” Austrian indie rock band Lion Season gets sentimental. As vocalist Adriana Roth writes, “The song is literally about having a crush on a very cool person. I wrote it while being high and in my love feels.” The band is scheduled to play Lichtenloo Festival, which takes place in southern Austria the weekend of 7/22-23.

A Deeper Heaven - Don’t Say

Influenced by the sound of classic and modern shoegaze/dream pop bands, SLC’s A Deeper Heaven merges the two eras expertly. On the new single “Don’t Say.” vocalist/songwriter Marc Wheeler gets personal. “This song is about someone I loved deeply who died of suicide. She didn’t talk much at all and had a very complex inner world. I tried to show her that I loved her beyond words, no words needed. Just a hug or sitting together was enough for me. I hope she felt and still feels I love her exactly how she is.”

megalashhh - The Mare

London-based trio megalashhh is back with their new single “The Mare.” The pounding bass drum and arpeggiated synths make the track perfect for a dark room filled with strobe lights. It’s equal parts darkwave and synthpop. This is the band’s first release since their 2022 EP Cheap Thrills. We’re stoked to see what else megalashhh has coming!

Search Results - Flower Rock Rain

On “Flower Rock Rain,” the Dublin band Search Results blends elements of indie rock, post-punk, jazz and hints of folk punk and feeds it back to us through a lo-fi filter. The 3-minute track features collaborations from members of Belfast-based band The Daisy Chain. The band’s new album Information Blip is out this fall.

TECHNOIR - Saturate

On “Saturate” electronic duo TECHNOIR delves the perpetual ambiguity that accompanies the human experience. According to the band, the song “is based on a guitar melody we had for years that didn’t take a final form until now.” The Italian project, consisting of Alexandros Finizio and Jennifer Villa, are set to release their next album AFTER MATH in the fall.

Voix in the Dark - Dark Disco

Electronic act Voix in the Dark, the solo project of Philly musician DeShawn Timothy, takes us deep underground on “Dark Disco.” On the track, TImothy commands us to let go and surrender to our inhibitions. Voix in the Dark blends the best of industrial, electroclash and minimal electronic sounds to create something edgy and distinct. Definitely keeping an eye on Voix in the Dark!

President Elect - Rebound

West London-based alt-rock band President Elect is releasing their energetic new single “Rebound,” this Friday 6/9. Influenced by bands such as Paramore, Blink-182, and Placebo, President Elect is already gaining recognition as a tight live act in London. On the track, the band comments, “It's pretty incredible watching one of your songs transform into everything you could’ve imagined and more. Spearheaded by Tayte of Mad Fox Manchester, ‘Rebound’ has captured the sound we’ve been looking for as an ambitious new band.”

Occults - Communion

LA duo Occults are back with their new single “Communion.” The gloomy track, influenced by 80s post-punk goth-rock, was mastered by Jason Corbett of ACTORS. The duo, Emilio Hernandez and Patrick Lawrence, easily convinces us to give in as they sing, “take this poison, heaven is just you and me.”

Fräulein - Big Cool

London-based Fräulein never shies away from dynamics. On “Big Cool,” the 90’s influenced indie rock band swings back and forth between standing stoic and pushing against with full force. Their latest single is off of their upcoming EP Pedestal out on 6/30 via Submarine Cat Records. The band is playing a show with ARXX at The Courtyard Theatre in London on 6/3.

Sea Lemon - Cellar

On “Cellar,” Seattle artist Sea Lemon, the solo project of musician Natallie Lew, confronts her interest in dark imagery. As Lew explains, “That idea of the ‘cellar’ in the song is based on that traditional horror trope where the protagonist can’t help but discover what’s lurking in the basement, and that what they find there often represents something really dark and horrifying.” The track is Sea Lemon’s first single after signing with Luminelle Recordings.

Jenny Besetzt - Goner

Post-punk band Jenny Besetzt is getting ready to release their next album Goner. On the title track and latest single, the band questions the impact of media and whether it will be our downfall. As the band explains on their Instagram, “‘Goner’ is a song about how consumerism and the more shallow and soulless elements of mass media contribute to the erosion of our society and render it a crude and shapeless nub.” Goner is out on 7/15 via Self Aware Records.

George Clanton - Justify Your Life

The nostalgia hits hard on this one. On his latest single “Justify Your Life,” LA producer/songwriter George Clanton dives headfirst into trip-hop / 90s euro-pop. Geoge Clanton’s upcoming album Ooh Rap I Ya is out on 7/28 via 100% Electronica and is available for pre-order now.

GLAAS - Cruel Heart, Cold Summer

Berlin post-punk band GLAAS has released their new EP Cruel Heart, Cold Summer. On the title track, the band lose their minds between layers of noise, pounding drums, ripping bass and saxophone. The band will be on tour across UE/UK in support of their new EP in June. The EP is available for pre-order on 7” vinyl from Static Shock Records.
