RIP Dunes - "Living in Fear"
New York-based RIP Dunes, the solo project of Matthew Iwanusa (Caveman), has dropped “Living in Fear.” It’s a melodic and synth-heavy song, described as “a darker, more driving strain of post-punk and new wave.” The song was co-produced by Iwanusa and Abe Seiferth (Nation of Language, Yeasayer). A new album, Tales from the Ripped, is on the way!
Porcelain - Waltz
Waltz isn’t just a dance in 3/4 time. It also happens to be the latest single by Porcelain about connecting with someone going through a tough time. “This song is about trying to relate with someone who is going through a depressive episode, to help them feel seen and that they’re not alone,” the Austin band shares. “Depression can be isolating; it can consume you in a way that makes you feel unrelatable to everyone around you, that no one understands what you're going through. The truth is, you're not alone; we just need to reach out to each other and talk about it. Everything that we carry, everything we keep to ourselves, it all adds up. Don’t let it consume you to a place where you make a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”
The Catburgers - The First Day of Spring
A sort of copy-paste songwriting method led to some complex songs for the Scottish band The Catburgers. As the band shares, "Dave, our new guitarist, has described this as the most complicated 2 minute 15 second song he has ever had to learn! Stuart and I went through a period of working up bits of songs and then pasting them together. I think this is an example of that.” The Coathangers will be releasing an LP made of material made up of recently discovered archival recordings.
Growing Pains - Bottle Rocket
“This song was inspired by a childhood memory of trying to send a toy rocket afar,” says Growing Pains’ bandmember Carl Taylor. “An act of reaching for something that can never be grasped. I don’t know if this was a real memory or a dream.” The band will release their next album Daniel Loves Mandy Forever on 10/9 via Photo Finish Records.
Pocket Lint - Book Lungs
UK post-punk/noise duo Pocket Lint breaks on their new song “Book Lungs.” As the band writes, “The song is about male ego and its inability to process fear without resorting to childish coping mechanisms. A tiny threat escalates into denial, bravado and wildly disproportionate destruction: tense, absurd and darkly funny.” All these feelings culminate in the last line of the chorus, “Let me set your house on fire.”
Growing Pains blurs the lines, RIP Dunes gets melodic, The Catburgers write complicated tunes, Porcelain dances in 3/4 time, and Pocket Lint burns down the house. All in the same week!
