Locust - White Light

Locust, Mark Van Hoen’s project, has had a long musical history spanning decades. Their new single “White Light” is both beautiful and haunting. “The song started life as ‘One Explanation’ on my subscriber-only Bandcamp album ‘It’s You’,” shares Van Hoen. “Based on a vocal sample from Sudanese music, it was developed with influence from fellow Touch artist Claire M Singer and her pieces performed on the Union Chapel Organ. To that, a live string quartet was added and the haunting 4-note vocal sample replaced by a session singer. Then, I presented the piece to Olive Kimoto, who wrote lyrics and vocal melody with distinctly religious and spiritual themes,  prompted by the instrumentation and harmonic nature of the music itself. More development and dynamics came through live performance, with drums, bass and guitar recorded by the band and added before the final mix.” Locust will release their new album Spectral+ on 9/11 via Todo Records.

Weather Happy - It Leaks Out

UK alt rock duo Weather Happy have announced their debut EP Moth, coming out later this year. On “It Leaks Out,” the band explores that sensation of keeping things in, until you can’t. "This was one of the first songs we wrote for this project," the band says. "It’s a song about masking and bottling up negative thoughts and feelings until they inevitably find a way out. The enigmatic “corridors” featured in the song represent the journey and impression those feelings make on and around our bodies with the constant need and pressure to reassure everyone that everything is fine. We loved writing this track. We were still working out which direction to take the band but rather than just ease in we kicked it off with this angry, angular, frustrated track and it perfectly reflected where we both were at that very moment in our lives.” Moth is out 10/30 via Easy Does It Records.

Hunter as a Horse - Paradise Lost

Electronic/dark pop act Hunter as a Horse, the solo project of South African musician and vocalist Mia van Wyk, has released their long-awaited debut album Paradise Lost. Speaking on the altum, van Wyk shares, “This album deals with my shadow, my transformation and my inner architecture. I have tried to show what is deep inside myself. I discovered that the things I was taught to bury were never my enemies, but are actually my power.” The album is out now via Metropolis Records and can be purchased on vinyl via Bandcamp.

Real Numbers - Was It Always This Way

Minneapolis indie rock act Real Numbers will release their new album Was It Always This Way in August. The album was tracked and mixed at Softcult Studios by Matt Castore, who has acted as the band’s producer for a long time. Since 2023, the group has been made up of songwriter Eli Hansen, Andrew Jansen (bass), Sophie Durbin (keyboard/vocals), Fez Felzan (drums) and Jeff Cornell (guitar). Covering themes including “modern fame, mixing opposites and reckoning with your own significance,” their music’s a perfect blend of post-punk and jangle pop.

Pitschouse - Dinner with The Dreamies

Seattle act Pitschouse has reunited and announced a new album out on 9/11. They’ve also released the first taste “Dinner with The Dreamies.” The band says, "It's about the dangers of being stuck in your head." Highly relatable. Watch the video directed by the band’s drummer Nick Shively.
