Frida Kill - City Gurl
New York’s punk band Frida Kill has shared the title track off their upcoming album. On “City Gurl” band member Maria Lina says: "When I wrote ‘City Gurl’ I was listening to a lot of music from the Indie sleaze era. Bands like Glass Candy, New Young Pony Club, and Santigold. I wanted to write songs more personal to my actual life and what I was going through and feeling at the time while also being inspired to make more dance, upbeat bangers. Something real but something I can dance to or rock out to." Frida Kill’s upcoming album City Gurl will be out via Insecurity Hits and Get Better Records.
Katzin - Anna
Earlier this year, NYC-based singer-songwriter Katzin signed to Mexican Summer. His latest song “Anna,” written during his freshman year at CalArts, explores the realities of growing into adulthood and letting go. "’Anna’ is a song about distant lovers — growth in distance,” Katzin says. “To be 'off and on' can feel like endless torture. But there's nothing more euphoric than to run back into the arms of something so familiar."
False Flowers- Chatham Rules
Sacramento’s False Flowers has dropped their new self-titled mini LP. It’s a dark wave/post-punk experience, influenced by true crime, horror films, and isolation. On the opening song “Chatham Rules,” the band offers, “‘Chatham Rules’ was one of the first songs we learned together as a band. I think it helped us set the tone for our whole approach. Make something atmospheric taking influence from our favorite post punk and darkwave bands, but keeping some of the drive of our favorite 70s and 80s punk rock bands.” False Flowers is out on a limited edition dark purple opaque 12” vinyl at 45rpm. Pick it up from Strange Club Records / Nightflash.
wavepool - Blue Moon
French shoegaze/dream pop project wavepool announced their debut EP Crayola. On “Blue Moon,” they choose to stay present, regardless of how crazy things may seem. "’Blue Moon’" is about those moments when nothing really makes sense, and that’s perfectly fine,” the band says. “Absurd and a little lost in an offbeat everyday life, the song invites you to let go and fully live in the moment without trying to figure everything out. It embodies the subtle art of not caring, with a touch of elegance." Crayola is out 10/24 via Howlin' Banana Records and Luik Music.
Big Bill - Cameras
Are we being watched? Most definitely. Philly/Austin art-rock act Big Bill offers up a suggestion with their new song “Cameras.” “It’s a song about the U.S.-Mexico border, I.C.E., and the increasingly Orwellian surveillance state in which we all live. In “Cameras,” we propose a cheeky solution— ‘inside the mansions let’s put cameras there too.’” Not a bad idea! The band’s upcoming album SICK MYTH is out 11/21 via TODO Records.
