5 Songs from The Faves
This week we picked songs from New York dance punk project Public Circuit, post-punk trio Titan, Portland’s Altar Girl, dream pop act Soundtrack Gospel and indie punk band VIAL.
You can also listen to music from Seek Warmth, Starling, SPRINTS and Glimmer on our playlist.
Public Circuit - Samson
Electronic post-punk act Public Circuit has announced their new album Modern Church. The first single is “named after the religious tale of Samson the warrior, a character I always thought was so cool as a child,” says band member Ethan Biamont. “What does it mean to embrace or defy the concepts of masculinity in a world so choked by patriarchal ideals for gender expression and sexuality? Samson loses his hair which is the key to his masculine strength, and I think that when you stray from the binary ideas of gender, it can feel like you need some obvious physical denotion to express that feeling. Cut me free.” Public CIrcuit has also released dates for their headline North American and European tour. Modern Church is out 9/12 via à La Carte Records and can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp.
Titan - Conjuring
NYC trio Titan mark their debut with the single “Conjuring.” It’s a song about being unafraid to follow the dark path. Engineered by Grammy award winning producer Dean Jones, the band was deeply inspired by 80’s goth bands including The Cure, Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees. With Esther Crow on vocals/guitar, Kristin FM on bass and Patty Rat on drums, Titan makes music reminiscent of those alt-goth sounds that the band is influenced by. As Crow explains, “The music of the 80’s was so theatrical. I was excited when I had the idea for this song because I knew I was tapping into a darker avenue that would call for an over-the-top vocal delivery and eerie instrumentation. I definitely want the audience to feel a bit uneasy.” Titan is expected to drop more music in the fall. Follow the band on Instagram for more info.
Soundtrack Gospel - Carry On
London indie dream pop act Soundtrack Gospel, the solo project of Jack Gee, has released the new song “Carry On.” Written during a writing retreat, it’s a sign of what’s coming from the songwriter and producer. “The original version was a slower idea with an extended intro,” he says. “All the synth-style sounds were created by running a guitar through a chain of modulation and effects, which was a really fun part of the process. Lyrically, it's very direct and I think the message speaks for itself.” Soundtrack Gospel is in the middle of producing a new EP, which will be out later this year.
VIAL - Creep Smoothie
Minneapolis-based indie punk trio VIAL mixes everything up on their new song “Creep Smoothie.” On the song, the band shares, “We wrote this new song feeling really inspired by heavier punk and hardcore projects that we love right now, which lead to a new sound “Creep Smoothie” brings, ushering us into a new era of VIAL.” Be warned: If you get in their way, they’ll make a frozen drink outta you!
Altar Girl - Night Terrors
Portland’s Altar Girl the self-proclaimed four-piece who “would be a goth band if we knew how to play goth,” is back with another single. “‘Night Terrors’ is a song that describes the fear of waking through sleep paralysis,” the band says. “The unsettling sense of a shrouded, voyeuristic intruder, and the inability to make sense of it or escape.” The alt femme post-punk band is releasing their debut record on 7/22.
